Arz (Pine Nuts)
Ibn Al-Qayyim wrote : "Arz" (with an open "hamza" and silent "raa") refers to the pine tree. Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم mentioned it in the following saying: "The example of a believer is like a fresh stalk of wheat, which the winds bend back and forth, sometimes standing upright and sometimes bending, while the example of the hypocrite is like the Arz ~ pine tree, which remains firmly standing until it is uprooted all at once."
Its seeds are considered hot and moist, and they have softening and dissolving properties. When soaked in water, they lose their irritating effect, but they are difficult to digest despite being highly nutritious. Pine seeds are beneficial for treating coughs, clearing phlegm from the lungs, increasing seminal fluid, and may cause stomach cramps. The antidote for its side effects is eating sour pomegranate seeds.
Arz (Pine-nuts ~ Chilghoza) is also called Sanaubar
Ibn-e-Sina wrote: Pine nuts are smaller and finer than pistachios, with a delicate shell. The larger variety, known as Kabbar, has a reddish shell that reveals a long, white, oily, and delicious kernel when cracked. The smaller variety has a triangular shape, a harder shell, and a sharper-tasting kernel with astringency and pungency, making it more akin to medicine than food. The larger variety (kabbar) is moderately balanced but tends toward warmth and increases moisture. The smaller variety is warm and dry in the second degree. Pine nuts possess qualities of softening, ripening, and dissolving, with a slight sting, especially in their fresh form. This sting can be alleviated by soaking in water, which also enhances their softening and mucilaginous properties. Their essence is earthy and watery, with a small amount of airiness. Pine nuts contribute to weight gain.
Musculoskeletal System: The larger pine nuts strengthen the body, alleviate weakness and relaxation of the joints, and dry out harmful moisture.
Respiratory System: Both the small and large varieties are beneficial for clearing foul lung phlegm, pus, and bleeding, and are effective against coughing. Particularly, the fresh, slightly bitter variety is useful. When cooked with sweet syrup, they are excellent for purging lung pus.
Digestive System: They are heavy and difficult to digest, though they are highly nutritious. They may irritate the stomach unless soaked in hot water. Individuals with a hot temperament should eat them with sugar syrup, while those with a cold temperament should eat them with honey. When prepared in this manner, they are more digestible and beneficial for the stomach. Raw pine nuts may irritate the stomach, but soaking them eliminates this effect and improves their digestibility.
Excretory System: Pine nuts significantly increase seminal fluid, especially when eaten with sesame seeds and sugar syrup or with honey and sugar. However, excessive consumption, particularly with thyme, may cause colic. This can be mitigated by consuming sour pomegranate seeds afterward. Pine nuts are highly effective in clearing kidney and bladder moisture, strengthening these organs to retain urine, and treating both types of urinary dribbling. They also help prevent bladder ulcers and stones, promote urination, and act as a poultice with Afsanteen (Mugwort) for related conditions.
Health Benefits of Pine Nuts
Immune System Boost: Pine nuts are rich in Vitamin C, an essential nutrient for enhancing the immune system. Vitamin C stimulates the production of white blood cells and has antioxidant properties that help protect against chronic diseases. Additionally, Vitamin C is vital for collagen production, which is necessary for the formation of new tissues, including muscle cells and blood vessels.
Improved Eye Health: Pine nuts contain high levels of Vitamin A and various carotenoids, which act as antioxidants and protect the eyes. These compounds help prevent the development of cataracts, improve visual strength, and reduce the risk of macular degeneration.
Skin and Hair Care: Vitamin A in pine nuts helps prevent wrinkles and neutralize free radicals that damage the skin. It also contributes to reducing blemishes and scars. Vitamin C, on the other hand, helps strengthen hair, prevent hair loss, and alleviate dandruff.
Improved Circulation: Pine nuts help enhance blood circulation and increase red blood cell production, which boosts oxygen levels in the body, increases energy, and prevents anemia, a condition that causes unexplained fatigue, muscle pain, and cognitive weakness.
Respiratory Health: Pine nuts have been shown to help eliminate excess mucus and phlegm in the respiratory system, contributing to the health of the lungs and airways.
Natural Anti-Inflammatory: Pine nuts contain powerful phytochemicals that reduce inflammation in the body. Studies have shown that people who regularly consume pine nuts experience lower levels of inflammation overall.
Cancer Prevention: Pine nuts are a good source of magnesium, which has been linked to a reduced risk of certain cancers, particularly pancreatic cancer and colorectal cancer. Consuming sufficient amounts of magnesium has been shown to decrease the risk of these types of cancer.
Aid in Weight Loss: Despite being calorie-dense, pine nuts can be beneficial for weight loss due to their high content of fiber, protein, and healthy fats. These components help increase satiety, reducing feelings of hunger and supporting weight management.
Boosting Energy Levels: Pine nuts are rich in iron, protein, and healthy fats, as well as magnesium, which plays a crucial role in breaking down glucose and fats. This process helps convert food into usable energy, contributing to stable energy levels.
Relieving Menstrual Symptoms: Magnesium and Vitamin B6, found in pine nuts, can help alleviate symptoms of menstruation such as cramps and fatigue. Studies have shown that these nutrients significantly reduce the severity of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms.
Reducing Heart Disease Risk: Regular consumption of pine nuts can help lower the risk of heart disease due to their content of healthy unsaturated fats, vitamins, and minerals beneficial to heart health. Studies indicate that eating nuts like pine nuts can reduce the risk of sudden death from heart attacks.
Maintaining Strong Bones: While calcium is essential for strong bones, Vitamin D, present in pine nuts, is also crucial for bone health. Vitamin D enhances calcium absorption and helps maintain healthy bones.
