Prophet's Guidance on treating Poisoning
Guidance of Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم in Treating the Poison that Affected Him in Khaybar from the Jews
Ibn al-Qayyam wrote : Abd al-Razzaq narrated from Ma'mar, from al-Zuhri, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Ka'b ibn Malik that a Jewish woman in Khaybar gifted Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم a roasted sheep. Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم asked, "What is this?" She replied, "A gift," being careful not to say it was charity, as he would not eat from charity. So, Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم ate, and the Sahabah also ate from it. Then he said, "Stop eating." He then asked the woman, "Did you poison this sheep?" She asked, "Who informed you of this?" He replied, "This bone in my hand." She admitted, saying, "Yes." He asked, "Why did you do it?" She responded, "If you were a liar, people would be rid of you, but if you were a Prophet, it would not harm you." Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم then had himself cupped three times on KAHIL (on the back, between shoulders) and instructed his companions to also be cupped, and they did take Hijamah. But some of them died as a result. (Mentioned by Abd al-Razzaq in his Musannaf, with trustworthy narrators)
In another narration, Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم had cupping performed on his KAHIL due to what he had consumed from the sheep. Abu Hind, who belonged to Banu Bayadah of the Ansar, performed the cupping with a horn and a blade. Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم lived for three more years until the illness in which he passed away. He said, "I still feel the pain from the morsel I ate of the sheep at Khaybar until now; it is as if it is severing my aorta." Thus, the Messenger of Allah, Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم passed away as a martyr. This was stated by Musa ibn Uqbah. (Mentioned by Abd al-Razzaq in his Musannaf, with trustworthy narrators)
The Musannaf of Abd al-Razzaq al-Sanʿani (Arabic: مصنف عبد الرزاق الصنعاني is an early collection of Ahadith compiled by the Yemeni scholar ʽAbd al-Razzaq al-Sanʽani (126-211 Hijrah). This work, belonging to the Musannaf genre, includes over 18,000 narrations organized by topic.
Treating Poison Involves Induced Expulsions and Antidotes
The treatment for poison involves methods to expel it and using antidotes that counteract or neutralize its effects, either through their qualities or unique properties. If a person lacks an antidote, they should immediately resort to a complete expulsion of the poison, with cupping (Hijamah) being the most effective method—especially if in a hot region or season.
In hot conditions, the toxic effect of poison quickly spreads into the bloodstream, circulating through the veins and passages until it reaches the heart, where it can lead to fatal consequences. Blood acts as the medium carrying poison to the heart and other organs. Therefore, if the poisoned person quickly removes blood, the poisonous nature mixed within it is expelled as well. If the expulsion is thorough, the poison will either be completely neutralized or weakened, allowing the body’s natural defenses to overcome or significantly diminish its harmful effect.
Performed Hijamah, He Had It Done on KAHIL (on the back, between the shoulders)
When Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم performed cupping, he had it done on KAHIL, which is the closest location for cupping to the heart. The toxic substance was partially expelled with the blood, but not completely. Its weakened trace remained, as Allah willed, to complete the ranks of honor for him in all respects. When Allah intended to honor him with martyrdom, the effect of that hidden trace of poison reappeared to fulfill Allah's decree.
This also revealed the deeper meaning of Allah’s words to the Jews, His enemies:
“Whenever a messenger came to you with what your souls did not desire, you became arrogant. Some you denied, and some you kill” (Al-Baqarah 2:87).
Here, Allah used the past tense for “denied,” which had already occurred, and the future tense for “kill,” foretelling an ongoing action that was expected to occur in future, implying that the Jews would kill Prophet Muhammad And Allah knows the best.
