Prophet’s Guidance on certain combination of foods
Ibn al-Qayyam wrote : And whoever contemplates the foods of Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) and what he used to eat will find that he never combined milk with fish, nor milk with something sour, nor two hot foods, nor two cold foods, nor two sticky foods (sticky means mucilaginous; lubricative), nor two constipating foods, nor two laxative foods, nor two thick foods, nor two relaxing foods, nor two foods that would turn into one compound, nor different foods such as a constipating and a laxative, a quickly digesting food with a slowly digesting food, nor roasted with cooked, nor fresh with dried, nor milk with eggs, nor meat with milk. He did not eat food when it was extremely hot, nor did he eat food left from the previous day reheated, nor any rotten or salty foods, such as pickles and salted fish. All these types of foods are harmful and cause the health to change for the worst. He used to remedy the harm of some foods with others whenever possible, neutralizing the heat of one with the coldness of another, or the dryness of one with the moisture of another, as he did with cucumbers and fresh dates, and as he used to eat dried dates (Tamar) with butter, which is known as HAIS, and drank soaked dates to soften the severe compositions of foods. He would recommend having supper, even with a handful of dates, and said: "Abandoning supper is a cause of aging," mentioned by Al-Tirmidhi in his "Jami'," and Ibn Majah in his "Sunan."
Abu Nu'aim mentioned that Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) used to forbid sleeping immediately after eating, mentioning that it hardens the heart. Therefore, in the advice of physicians for those who want to maintain health: one should walk a few steps after supper, even if only a hundred steps, and not sleep immediately after it, as it is very harmful. Some of their scholars said: or pray after it so that the food settles at the bottom of the stomach, making digestion easier and better. It was not part of his practice to drink during his meal, as it spoils it, especially if the water is hot or cold, which is very harmful. It is disliked to drink water immediately after exercise, fatigue, sexual intercourse, food, and before it, and after eating fruit, although drinking after some fruits is easier than others, and after a bath, and upon waking up from sleep. All these activities will harm the health and one should not think about the benefits he might gain from drinking with the food, it is nothing but a mistake.
