Prophet’s (صلى الله عليه وسلم) guidance in Treating a Scorpion Sting with Ruqyah
وَعَن عَليّ قَالَ: بَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ يُصَلِّي فَوَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ فَلَدَغَتْهُ عَقْرَبٌ فَنَاوَلَهَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِنَعْلِهِ فَقَتَلَهَا فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قَالَ: لَعَنَ اللَّهُ الْعَقْرَبَ مَا تَدَعُ مُصَلِّيًا وَلَا غَيْرَهُ أَوْ نَبِيًّا وَغَيْرَهُ ثُمَّ دَعَا بملحٍ وماءٍ فَجعله فِي إِناءٍ ثمَّ جَعَلَ يَصُبُّهُ عَلَى أُصْبُعِهِ حَيْثُ لَدَغَتْهُ وَيَمْسَحُهَا وَيُعَوِّذُهَا بِالْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ. رَوَاهُمَا الْبَيْهَقِيُّ فِي شُعَبِ الْإِيمَانِ
Ali Radi Allaho Anh said: When Allah’s messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم was praying one night, he placed his hand on the ground (in Sajdah) and was stung by a scorpion, so he struck it with his sandal and killed it. Then when he departed, he said: “Allah curse the scorpion; it does not leave alone one who is praying or anyone else, or a prophet or anyone else.” He then called for salt and water, and putting it in a vessel, he began to pour it over his finger where the scorpion had stung him; and then wiped it, seeking refuge in Allah by reciting the Mu’awwidhatan. (Surah Al-Falaq and Naas) (Baihaqi in Shu’ab al-Iman, Mishkat al-Masabih 4567). This Hadith illustrates treatment with a combination of both natural and spiritual remedies.
Al-Mu'awwidhatayn (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Naas) offer protection from all forms of evil, both generally and in detail. Seeking refuge from the evil of what Allah has created encompasses all harmful entities, whether in the physical or spiritual realms. Seeking refuge from the evil of the night (Ghasiq), which refers to darkness and its sign, the setting of the moon, implies protection from the evil spirits that spread when the light of day fades, allowing them to roam freely. Additionally, seeking refuge from the evil of the witches who blow on knots refers to protection from the harm of sorcery and magic.
Seeking refuge from the evil of the envier (Hasid) when he envies implies protection from malicious souls whose jealousy and evil gaze cause harm.
The second Surah (Surah An-Naas) offers refuge from the evil of both human and jinn devils, thereby providing comprehensive protection. These two Surahs together encompass seeking protection from every form of harm, and they hold great significance in safeguarding oneself.
From evils before they occur, Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم recommended reciting Al-Mu'awwidhatayn (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Naas) after every prayer, as narrated by Tirmidhi. This has a profound secret in protecting oneself from evils between prayers. Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم also said, "No one has sought refuge with anything better than these two Surahs." It is also mentioned that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was afflicted by magic involving eleven knots, and as Jibreel descended with these Surahs, each time a verse was recited, a knot would untie, until all the knots were undone, and it was as though the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was released from the knots of magic. (both these Surahs in combination have 11 verses; they came as the cure against 11 knots)
As for the natural treatment in this Hadith, salt is known to be beneficial for various poisons, especially scorpion stings. The author of "Al-Qanoon" stated that scorpion stings should be treated with salt mixed with flaxseed, and others have mentioned it as well. Salt has the power to draw out and dissolve toxins, and since scorpion stings have a fiery quality, they require cooling, drawing, and extraction. This is why water is used to cool the sting, while the salt helps to draw out and remove the poison. This combination is one of the most effective, simplest, and easiest treatments. It also highlights the importance of treating such ailments with cooling, drawing, and extraction.
وَقَدْ رَوَى مسلم فِي «صَحِيحِهِ» عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ: جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! مَا لَقِيتُ مِنْ عَقْرَبٍ لَدَغَتْنِي الْبَارِحَةَ فَقَالَ: «أَمَا لَوْ قُلْتَ حِينَ أَمْسَيْتَ: أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ، لَمْ تَضُرَّكَ
Muslim narrated in his "Sahih" from Abu Hurairah Radi Allaho Anh that a man came to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I was stung by a scorpion last night." The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied: "If you had said in the evening, 'I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created,' it would not have harmed you."
It is important to know that divine natural remedies benefit before & after the ailment has occurred, prevent its occurrence, or reduce its harm if it does happen. Natural remedies, on the other hand, only work after the illness has manifested. Supplications and invocations either prevent these harmful causes from arising or diminish their effects, depending on the strength and completeness of the supplication. Ruqyah and invocations are used both to preserve health and to cure illness.
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ إِذَا أَوَى إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ كُلَّ لَيْلَةٍ جَمَعَ كَفَّيْهِ ثُمَّ نَفَثَ فِيهِمَا فَقَرَأَ فِيهِمَا (قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ) وَ(قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ) وَقُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ ثُمَّ يَمْسَحُ بِهِمَا مَا اسْتَطَاعَ مِنْ جَسَدِهِ يَبْدَأُ بِهِمَا عَلَى رَأْسِهِ وَوَجْهِهِ وَمَا أَقْبَلَ مِنْ جَسَدِهِ يَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ.
It was narrated from Aishah Radi Allaho Anha that when Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم went to bed every night, he would hold his hands together and blow into them, and recite into them (by bringing his hands together) the last three Surahs of Quran. Then he would wipe them over whatever he could of his body, starting with his head, face and the front of his body, and he would do it 3 times. (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017)
وَكَمَا فِي حَدِيثِ عُوذَةِ أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ الْمَرْفُوعِ «اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ رَبِّي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ عَلَيْكَ تَوَكَّلْتُ وَأَنْتَ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيم، وَقَدْ تَقَدَّمَ وَفِيهِ: مَنْ قَالَهَا أَوَّلِ نَهَارِهِ لَمْ تُصِبْهُ مُصِيبَةٌ حَتَّى يُمْسِيَ، وَمَنْ قَالَهَا آخِرَ نَهَارِهِ لَمْ تُصِبْهُ مُصِيبَةٌ حَتَّى يُصْبِحَ
As mentioned in the Hadith of the supplication of Abu Darda Radi Allaho Anh, Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "O Allah, You are my Lord; there is none worthy of worship but You. I rely on You, and You are the Lord of the mighty Throne." It has been narrated that whoever recites this at the beginning of their day will not be afflicted by any calamity until the evening, and whoever recites it at the end of their day will not be afflicted by any calamity until the morning.
وَكَمَا فِي «الصَّحِيحَيْنِ مَنْ قَرَأَ الْآيَتَيْنِ مِنْ آخِرِ سُورَةِ الْبَقَرَةِ فِي لَيْلَةٍ كَفَتَاهُ
Similarly, in both Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, it is mentioned: "Whoever recites the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah in the night, they will be sufficient for him."
وَكَمَا فِي «صحيح مسلم» عن النبي صلى الله عليه وَسَلَّمَ: «مَنْ نَزَلَ مَنْزِلًا فَقَالَ: أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ، لَمْ يَضُرَّهُ شَيْءٌ حَتَّى يَرْتَحِلَ مِنْ مَنْزِلِهِ ذَلِكَ
In Sahih Muslim, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "Whoever settles in a place and says: 'I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He created,' nothing will harm them until he departs from that place."
وَكَمَا فِي سُنَنِ أبي داود أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ فِي السَّفَرِ يَقُولُ بِاللَّيْلِ: يَا أَرْضُ، رَبِّي وَرَبُّكِ اللَّهُ، أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ شَرِّكِ وَشَرِّ مَا فِيكِ، وَشَرِّ مَا يَدُبُّ عَلَيْكِ، أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ أَسَدٍ وَأَسْودٍ، وَمِنَ الْحَيَّةِ وَالْعَقْرَبِ، وَمِنْ سَاكِنِ الْبَلَدِ، وَمِنْ وَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ
In Sunan Abi Dawood, it is mentioned that when Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was on a journey, he would say at night: "O earth, my Lord and your Lord is Allah. I seek refuge in Allah from your evil and the evil of what is within you, and from the evil of what walks upon you. I seek refuge in Allah from the lion, the black serpent, the scorpion, the inhabitants of the land, and from parents and their offspring."
