SALAAT ~ Prayer
Healing by Salaat
When a believer performs Salaat, he does so for his own benefit and well-being. Allah, The Glorified and Exalted, is independent of all worlds. He, in His majesty, has no need for our prayers, fasting, charity, or pilgrimage. Even if the entire creation prays to Him, it would not increase His dominion in any way. And if the entire creation disobeyed Him, it would not decrease His sovereignty, power, or greatness in any way. We are the ones in need of Allah, not the other way around.
This is why, when Allah prescribed obligations upon us, they were, and still are, for our own benefit. Salaat ~ prayer is one of these obligations, which Allah Gave us after the Prophet’s صلى الله عليه وسلم night journey from the sacred Masjid (in Makkah) to the Al-Aqsa Masjid, and then to the highest heavens. This highlights the importance of prayer in our lives as Muslims. When we perform prayer, we engage physically, spiritually, and mentally, which is the secret of its importance in our lives.
Allah the Exalted says:
"O you who believe, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with those who are patient" (2:153).
Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم and his companions would always resort to prayer when faced with challenges or grief, finding comfort and strength in their connection with Allah.
Hadhrat Huzaifah Radi Allaho Anh narrates that whenever the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم encountered any hardship, he would immediately turn to Salaat (prayer).
Salaat is a tremendous blessing from Allah. Turning to Salaat during times of distress is like rushing towards His mercy, and when His mercy arrives, no trace of worry remains. There are many instances in the life of Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم that show his practice of this, and his companions followed him closely in this regard.
Abu Darda Radi Allaho Anh mentions: "Whenever a strong wind blew, Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم would quickly go to the Masjid and remain there until the wind calmed down." Similarly, during a solar or lunar eclipse, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم would immediately begin offering Salaat.
Hadhrat Suhaib (Radi Allaho Anh) was informed by the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم that all previous Prophets of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم also turned to Salaat in times of trouble.
Hadhrat Ibn Abbas Radi Allaho Anh was once traveling when he received news of his son's death. He dismounted from his camel and performed two Rakaats of Salaat, remaining in Tashahhud for an extended period. Afterward, he recited: "انا لله وانا اليه راجعون" and said, "I have done what Allah has commanded us in His Holy Book:
Seek help from Allah through patience and Salaat.
A separate account relates that upon receiving news of the demise of one of the Holy Prophet's (صلى الله عليه وسلم) wives, Ibn Abbas Radi Allaho Anh immediately fell into prostration. When queried as to the cause, he responded, "Our beloved Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم had instructed us to prostrate in Salaat whenever afflicted by adversity. What tribulation could be more profound than the passing of the 'Mother of the Believers'?"
It is written in some Tafseer books that when the family of Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم faced distress, he would direct them towards the observance of Salaat, & he would recite the following verse: "Bid your family to perform Salah, and adhere to it yourself. We ask no provision from you. We give provision to you. And the ultimate end is in favor of Taqwa (Allah-fearing, and piety).." (Qur'an 20:132)
Ibn Al-Qayyam wrote about Salaat:
Prayer brings sustenance, preserves health, repels harm, wards off diseases, strengthens the heart, brightens the face, brings joy to the soul, removes laziness, invigorates the limbs, strengthens energy, opens the chest, nourishes the soul, enlightens the heart, preserves blessings, repels afflictions, brings blessings, distances from Sheytaan, and draws one nearer to the Most Merciful (Allah).
In summary, prayer has an incredible effect on maintaining the health of both the body and heart, strengthening them, and driving away harmful elements from them. No two people are tested with affliction, illness, trial, or misfortune, except that the one who prays has a lesser share of the hardship and a safer outcome.
Prayer has a remarkable effect in warding off the troubles of this world, especially if it is performed with its due completion both outwardly and inwardly. Salaat is the best way to repel the harms of this world and the hereafter and to attract Allah’s blessings.
A Muslim’s well-being is closely connected to Salaat, and the secret behind this is that Salaat (Namaz) establishes a connection with Allah, the Almighty. The stronger the connection between servant and his Lord, the more the doors of goodness are opened for him, and the causes of harm are cut off. Through this connection, the servant receives the blessings of success, well-being, health, prosperity, wealth, comfort, and joy. All forms of happiness and blessings are brought near and rush towards him.
Importance of Prayer as a CURE for Diseases
As for Salaat, its effect on bringing joy and strength to the heart, and filling it with delight is of great significance. It establishes a profound connection between the heart and soul with Allah, and through this closeness, one enjoys remembering The Lord, rejoices in conversing with Him, and standing before Him. During prayer, all parts of the body and its faculties are engaged in His worship, with each part receiving its due share. This involvement frees the heart from attachments to people and their concerns, drawing all the energies of the heart and limbs towards the Lord, the Creator, all of this makes Salaat one of the greatest remedies, bringing joy and nourishment suited only to sound hearts.
As for the hearts that are ailing, they are like bodies that cannot tolerate medicine.
Salaat keeps one away from sin, cures the diseases of the heart, drives away illnesses from the body, enlightens the heart, brightens the face, energizes the limbs and soul, increases sustenance, repels oppression, supports the oppressed, suppresses overwhelming desires, preserves blessings, wards off punishment, brings down mercy, removes distress, and is beneficial for many ailments.
Abu Huraira Radi Allaho Anh said: “The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم set out in the early morning and I did likewise. I prayed, then I sat. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم turned to me and said: ‘Do you have a stomach problem?’ I said: ‘Yes, O Messenger of Allah.’ He said: ‘Get up and pray, for in Salaat there is healing. Sunan Ibn Majah 3458
Prayer is an exercise for both the soul and the body. It involves various movements and postures, such as standing, bowing, prostrating, sitting, and transitioning between these postures. These movements engage most of the joints and also affect many internal organs, such as the stomach, intestines, and other bodily systems related to digestion and nourishment. It cannot be denied that these movements strengthen and help break down harmful substances, especially when accompanied by the strength of the soul during Salaat. This strengthens the body’s natural defenses, helping to alleviate pain.
We have discussed in the previous assignments that sins are one of the major factors which bring sickness to the heart & body. Salaat / prayer is a powerful remedy which creates a courage of staying away from sins, Quran says :
Recite what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish Salaat. Indeed, (genuine) Salaat should deter one from indecency and wickedness. The remembrance of Allah is an even greater deterrent. And Allah fully knows what you all do.
But if a Muslim has committed a sin, its ill effect should be erased immediately & Salaat is one of the eradicators of sins.
Establish Salaat (O Prophet) at both ends of the day and in the early part of the night. Surely good deeds wipe out evil deeds. That is a reminder for the mindful.
Narrated Abu Hurairah Radi Allaho Anh: I heard Allah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم saying, "If there was a river at the door of anyone of you and he took a bath in it five times a day, would you notice any dirt on him?" They said, "Not a trace of dirt would be left." Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم added, "That is the example of the five prayers with which Allah Erases evil deeds." Sahih al-Bukhari 528
Prayer cannot be performed without ablution (Wudhoo), and Wudhoo itself is an act that washes away the sins.
Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "When a Muslim, or a believer, washes his face (in the course of Wudu'), every sin which he committed with his eyes, will be washed away from his face with water, or with the last drop of water; when he washes his hands, every sin which is committed by his hands will be effaced from his hands with the water, or with the last drop of water; and when he washes his feet, every sin his feet committed will be washed away with the water, or with the last drop of water; until he finally emerges cleansed of all his sins." [Muslim, Riyad as-Salihin 1028].
Both Wudhoo & Salaat wash away the sins (which create diseases) & hence bring Shifa for the sick.
Salaat is the best way to ask Allah for your needs & there is a special way & Dua for this, and a sick person can perform the same for seeking Shifa :
It was narrated that Abdullah bin Abi Awfa Al-Aslami Radi Allaho Anh said: “The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم came out to us and said: ‘Whoever has some need from Allah or from any of His creation, let him perform ablution and pray two Rak’ah, then let him say:
(None has the right to be worshiped but Allah, the Forbearing, the Most Generous. Glory is to Allah, the Lord of the Mighty Throne. Praise is to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. O Allah, I ask You for the means of Your mercy and forgiveness, the benefit of every good deed and safety from all sins. I ask You not to leave any sin of mine but You forgive it, or any distress but You relieve it, or any need that is pleasing to You but You meet it). Then he should ask Allah for whatever he wants in this world and in the Hereafter, for it is decreed.” Sunan Ibn Majah 1384
Wahb bin Munabbih said: "Turn to Salaat to fulfill your needs through Allah. In earlier times, whenever people were struck by calamity, they would immediately rush to Salaat."
There are numerous sayings from the Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم about the importance of Salaat and its many virtues, a few selected quotes are written below:
- Salaat is the first and foremost command from Allah, and it will be the first thing accounted for on the Day of Judgment.
- It was narrated from Umm Salamah Radi Allaho Anha that Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم used to say, during the illness that would be his last: الصَّلَاةَ وَمَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُكُمْ “The Salaat, and those whom your hands possess (slaves).” And he kept on saying it until his tongue could no longer utter any words. Sunan Ibn Majah 1625
- Salaat creates a barrier between a person and Shirk.
- Salaat is the hallmark of Islam. A person who offers prayers at the prescribed times with sincerity, following all its regulations including the recommended acts, is indeed a true believer.
- Of all the commands from Allah, Imaan and Salaat hold the highest value. If there had been anything better than Salaat, Allah would have prescribed it for His Angels, some of whom are always in bowing (Rukoo’) and others in prostration (Sajdah).
- Salaat humiliates the Devil (Sheytaan).
- Salaat is the light for a believer.
- Salaat is the best form of Jihaad.
- Allah continues to forgive a person as long as they are engaged in Salaat.
- When calamity strikes from the heavens... people frequenting the Masjid are spared and saved.
- Hellfire is forbidden to burn the body parts that touch the ground while performing Sajdah.
- Among all practices, performing salaat at its prescribed times is the most beloved to Allah.
- Allah loves the posture of a person in Sajdah, as they humbly press their forehead to the ground.
- A person is closest to Allah when in Sajdah.
- Salaat is the gateway to Paradise.
- When a person stands in Salaat, the gates of Paradise are opened, and the veils between him and Allah are lifted (as long as the Salaat is not disrupted by unnecessary actions like coughing).
- In Salaat, one metaphorically knocks on the door of the Sovereign Lord, and that door is always opened for the one who knocks.
- The role of Salaat in Islam is like the position of the head in the body.
- Salaat illuminates the heart. Those who desire enlightenment should seek it through Salaat.
- If a person seeks forgiveness from Allah, he should perform wudhu properly, pray two or four Rakaats of Fardh or Nafl, and then ask for forgiveness. Allah will forgive him.
- Every piece of land on which Allah is remembered through Salaat holds itself in higher regard than the rest of the earth.
- Allah accepts the Dua of anyone who prays after offering two Rakaats of Salaat. Sometimes the request is granted immediately, and other times, it is delayed for the person's benefit.
- After every Fardh Salaat, Allah grants a person the fulfillment of one Dua or wish.
- Hellfire is forbidden for, and Paradise is promised to the individual who performs Wudhu correctly and offers Salaat with devotion, adhering to its rules.
- Sheytaan is fearful of a Muslim who is diligent in his Salaat. However, the moment he becomes neglectful, Sheytaan finds an opportunity and strives to lead him astray.
- Salaat is the offering of the devout and pious.
- The four Rakaats before Zuhr are considered equivalent in merit to the four Rakaats of Tahajjud.
- The mercy of Allah turns towards the one who stands in Salaat.
- Salaat performed late at night (Tahajjud) holds the highest value, but few people engage in it.
- Two Rakaats offered during the late hours of the night hold more value than all the wealth in the world. If not for the fear of burdening my followers, I would have made it (Tahajjud) obligatory.
- Continue offering Tahajjud, as it is the path of the righteous and a way to draw closer to Allah. Tahajjud helps one avoid sins, grants forgiveness, and promotes physical health.
- Allah says, 'O son of Adam! Do not neglect the four Rakaats in the early morning, for I will help you with the rest of your day.
Indeed, Salaat is a tremendous blessing, but only those who have experienced it can truly understand its value. This is why Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم referred to it as the delight of his eyes and would spend a significant part of the night in prayer before Allah. Even on his deathbed, Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم reminded us to be mindful of Salaat. Anas Radi Aallaho Anh narrated that he heard the Prophet
[My comfort (coolness for my eyes) has been provided in Salaat (prayer)]
